About Us
A F Thomas and Sons LTD is a long-established Newport business which was founded in 1932 by Albert Frederick Thomas.
During the early 1930’s Albert was an electrician working at Newport docks, and had a life-long ambition to open an electrical shop of his own.
Albert’s expertise and knowledge of electrical was recognised by Royalty, as he was awarded the King’s Medal for this involvement with the invention of sonar. He was awarded £100 for his contribution, which was used to open his store in Pillgwenlly Newport.
Albert made his own radios from scratch in a spare bedroom in Brunel Street and sold them in his new shop. The business thrived on its reputation for excellent customer service and eventually the product range expanded to include televisions and then household appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators.
In 1992 we purchased another store in Abergavenny which was an exiting Spares business and this continues to thrive offering the already established spares outlet along with the addition of the appliances being sold locally.
In 2002 AF Thomas and Sons joined Europe’s largest independent buying groups. Euronics, which gave the company the huge buying power it needed to compete with the internet, large supermarkets and chain stores.
The buying group has more than 600 stores all over the country, allowing smaller independant stores to get an edge over the larger chains.
Due to the constant demand for its services and value for money high-quality products, current managing director Andrew Thomas, Alfred’s grandson, expanded the business in 2015 and relocated the Newport branch to its new home at Mendalgief Retail Park, Maesglas next to Argos, Tk Maxx and Smyths toy store.

A F Thomas Electricals can deliver and install your new washing machine, dishwasher, tumble drier and refrigeration product to existing points and we also remove and dispose of the old one too
They can also deliver, install, tune in and demonstrate your new television to existing points and remove your old television set for a small fee too.

Founded in 1932 by Albert Frederick Thomas, A F Thomas and Sons Ltd is a well-established, family-run electrical business based in Newport. Albert, an experienced electrician working at Newport docks, had a lifelong ambition to open his own electrical store.
His expertise was recognized by royalty, earning him the prestigious King’s Medal for his contribution to the invention of sonar. The £100 prize he received helped Albert turn his dream into a reality by opening his first shop in Pillgwenlly, Newport.
Starting with hand-crafted radios built in a spare bedroom on Brunel Street, the business quickly gained a reputation for exceptional customer service. As demand grew, Albert expanded his offerings to include televisions, and later, household appliances like washing machines and refrigerators.
Expansion and Innovation Over the Years
In 1992, A F Thomas and Sons Ltd expanded with the acquisition of an Abergavenny store specializing in spare parts. This new venture, which continues to thrive, combines spares with an extensive range of household appliances, serving the local community’s needs.
By 2002, the company became part of Euronics, Europe’s largest independent buying group. This membership boosted A F Thomas and Sons’ purchasing power, allowing them to compete with larger retailers and e-commerce giants while maintaining the personalized service their customers value.
Growth and Relocation for Better Service
The company’s growth continued under the leadership of Andrew Thomas, grandson of Albert. In 2015, the Newport branch was relocated to the Mendalgief Retail Park in Maesglas, conveniently situated near TK Maxx and Smyths Toy Store, to meet increasing customer demand.
In response to growing orders, A F Thomas and Sons opened a 3,000-square-foot satellite warehouse in Newport in November 2022, improving logistics and ensuring faster product delivery.
In October 2023, the company expanded further with a new store in Monmouth, located at 14 Monnow Street, NP25 3EE, next to Timpsons and a few doors up from Lloyds Bank. The Monmouth store offers a complete range of white goods and small domestic appliances.
In June 2025, the company expanded again with a fourth store in Chepstow, located at 15 High Street NP16 5LQ, next door to WH Smith and Boots. This branch offers a full range of Domestic Appliances and TV and Audio as well as small domestic appliances and accessories.
