A F Thomas and Sons LTD is a long-established Newport business which was founded in 1932 by Albert Frederick Thomas.

During the early 1930’s Albert was an electrician working at Newport docks, and had a life-long ambition to open an electrical shop of his own.

Albert’s expertise and knowledge of electrical was recognised by Royalty, as he was awarded the King’s Medal for this involvement with the invention of sonar. He was awarded £100 for his contribution, which was used to open his store in Pillgwenlly Newport.

Albert made his own radios from scratch in a spare bedroom in Brunel Street and sold them in his new shop. The business thrived on its reputation for excellent customer service and eventually the product range expanded to include televisions and then household appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators.

In 1992 we purchased another store in Abergavenny which was an exiting Spares business and this continues to thrive offering the already established spares outlet along with the addition of the appliances being sold locally.

In 2002 AF Thomas and Sons joined Europe’s largest independent buying groups. Euronics, which gave the company the huge buying power it needed to compete with the internet, large supermarkets and chain stores.

The buying group has more than 600 stores all over the country, allowing smaller independant stores to get an edge over the larger chains.

Due to the constant demand for its services and value for money high-quality products, current managing director Andrew Thomas, Alfred’s grandson, expanded the business in 2015 and relocated the Newport branch to its new home at Mendalgief Retail Park, Maesglas next to Argos, Tk Maxx and Smyths toy store.

They can also deliver, install, tune in and demonstrate your new television to existing points and remove your old television set for a small fee too.
