At A F Thomas Electricals we want to give you the same experience that you would get if you were in one of our stores so here are the key facts that you need to know when deciding on which washing machine to buy.

Kilo Load Capacity

There are many different sizes of drum capacities available from 6Kg to 12Kg, depending on your washing requirements we would advise to consider the following:

  • 6Kg: This size is ideal if you live alone or have a very small amount of washing to do
  • 7-9Kg: These sizes are ideal for medium sized households
  • 10-12Kg: These sizes are for Large families or if you want to wash large Duvets etc

If you are unsure of what a Kilo of washing relates to then one Kilo is generally the equivalent of one complete outfit or a bath towel

Spin Speed

The spin speed of a washing machine is the amount of times the drum rotates per minute, so in basic terms, the faster the spin speed, the drier the clothes will come out. However you have to bear in mind that the faster the spin then also the more creased the clothes will become. An average spin speed is 1200 RPM and a very high spin speed is 1600RPM. For delicate items we would recommend that you reduce the spin speed. Our range of washing machines come in the following spin speeds:

  • 1200 RPM
  • 1300 RPM
  • 1400 RPM
  • 1500 RPM
  • 1600 RPM

Energy Rating

All Domestic appliances have to comply with the energy saving system and they are all graded from A+++ to D. The different letters gives you the overall energy performance of the machine, for example a A+ machine will cost around £30 per year to run and each + or letter below is around 10% better or worse to run. So a A+++ machine is 30% cheaper to run per year than a A rated machine and so on. So if you want to do your bit for the environment then go look for A+ or higher machines.

Special Programmes

Once you have picked your load size, spin speed and Energy rating, other features that may help you decide are special features such as:

  • Quick wash: this often means wash times from 15 minutes to 30 or 60 minutes. This is a particular option that customers ask for due to the modern washing machine taking so long to complete a standard wash.
  • Anti Stain: ideal if you have clothes that are often heavily stained from sporting activities or grease and grime.
  • Delay start: this delays the start of the cycle, ideal if you want the machine to start after you have fallen asleep at night or if you are using Economy 7 electricity.
  • Reduced Creases: this does exactly what is says on the tin!
  • Wool Cycles: ideal if you have special clothing made of wool that requires a special programme.
  • Steam: some machines now use steam in the aid of creating a high quality wash which includes a steam refresh which is great for shirts that just need a freshen up.
  • Direct drive: this is a feature that is generally exclusive to LG washing machines, this system means there is no belt or pulley on the machine and the motor directly drives the drum which gives you a very smooth action and reduced noise levels.
